A new way to explore history and historic preservation

Check out the CoMo Preservation: CommunityMade List, a new resource designed to help you explore historic preservation and Columbia and Boone County’s history.

The List consists of online resources and 34 books and materials selected from the library’s extensive holdings by CoMo Preservation volunteers Nina Sappington and Dianna Borsi O’Brien.

Let us know if we missed your favorite books or online resources!

The list is part of a new initiative of the Columbia Public Library launched to highlight local organizations’ work and increase community engagement.

The resources listed range from a book on Columbia College History to the 2015 publication of Columbia’s Historic Sharp End magazine, published by the Columbia Daily Tribune. Some materials, such as the Standard Atlas of Boone County, Missouri, are only available for in-library use. In contrast, others, such as the 2018 book “Iconic Restaurants of Columbia, Missouri,” are available as a book and an ebook.

Other CommunityMade Lists for the Columbia Public Library include the City of Refuge and LocalMotion.

CoMo Preservation is devoted to helping homeowners, landlords, and institutions prevent the destruction of historic architecture. Original period styles might be replicated, but will forever lack the social history of authentic structures. The preservation of historic places and spaces gives people a sense of place and boosts Columbia’s economy. You can get involved by volunteering, signing up for our mailing list, attending an event, becoming a member or donating.
